KEYNOTE: High-Altitude Student Leadership

Mount Everest takes two months to climb. Temperatures are cold enough to freeze your hands within 90 seconds. Glaciers underfoot can collapse at any second. There are cliffs up to 5 times as tall as the empire state building. Avalanches fall on nearly a daily basis. These challenges can cause even the toughest of climbers to consider quitting on a daily basis. In the face of all these obstacles, how do the best climbers not only endure, but also inspire, encourage, and lead their fellow teammates to the top? The same way YOU can persist and bring a thriving team along with you. This keynote helps student leaders form great teams and adapt, collaborate, and persist their way toward 'impossible' summits.

EACH STUDENT LEAVES WITH:

  • The 4-Part "Great Teammate" Formation Checklist. These four instructive teammate filters help teen leaders to find quality teammates and identify superb coaches and guides.
  • The Resilience A.R.C. Three surprising tools that high-altitude mountaineers use to renew their energy reserves and overcome overwhelm. Backed by Harvard Business Review and peer-reviewed studies on resilience.
  • The "Yeti-Slayer" Technique. A simple and powerful process to confidently ignore the haters, complainers, whiners, and energy vampires.
  • The Mountaineer's Teammate Check-In. This tool is how mountain guides generate long-term trust, provide servant leadership, and effectively encourage their teams to endure, persist, and carry on.

KEYNOTE: Climb On! Success Strategies for Teens

World-class climbers have a simple set of rules for succeeding in the vertical world…. but what about you? Do you have a simple formula designed to help you identify your life’s purpose and a plan to make your vision a reality? With this keynote, you will! Themed around rock-climbing, this presentation will guide you to create your own definition of success, create a rock-solid sequence of action steps, and you'll develop the resilience to keep going after your major summits. You’ll learn simple yet brilliant lessons to succeed in education, sports, relationships, family life, and design the life of your dreams.

EACH STUDENT LEAVES WITH:

  • Step-by-step system for identifying worthwhile summits. They'll also learn to confidently say 'no thanks' to mis-aligned opportunities. This is the cure for "possibility overwhelm" that so many students face today.
  • Process map for creating a plan for success including how to create an ideal training schedule, select coaches and mentors, develop a marketable skill-set, and how to chunk down a timeline into achievable mini-summits.
  • The Climber's resilience formula: A+T+D = Success  This powerful equation is the key to how top climbers stick to their goals, stay motivated during training, and maintain a calm sense of confidence as they prepare for their biggest challenges. Students will know how to not just bounce back after inevitable setbacks, but bounce forward, emerging better than they were before obstacles appeared.

WORKSHOP: THE MOUNTAINTOP LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE

You're about to undergo a undergo a mountaintop adventure of self-discovery and high-altitude leadership skills. In this workshop, you'll be dropped in the foothills of the mountains and learn what it takes to reach the top. Your first objective is to establish your personal leadership basecamp. With basecamp established, it's time to climb! You'll reach four sequential 'high camps' of leadership.

EACH STUDENT WILL ESTABLISH:

  • LEADERSHIP BASECAMP: Self-mastery. Students will learn how to calibrate their inner compasses, align to their values, and 'find their center' in any moment of anxiety or stress.  These research-backed steps help a student to harness increasingly common feelings of overwhelm. The benefit? A clear mind, confidence and calm in preparation for tackling the mountain ahead.
  • CAMP 1: Personal success metrics. Students will create goal achievement timelines, action statements, and their own measurements of "a life well-lived."
  • CAMP 2: The 4-part team formation formula. Students will know how to select great teammates and create their core team of fellow climbers.
  • CAMP 3: Great boundaries and the skill to say 'no' when needed. Often, leaders are expected to become 'yes' machines. This people-pleasing approach to leadership is a formula for burnout. Healthy boundaries are a critical leadership skill to guard one's energy, time, and make space for the things that matter most.
  • Camp 4: The Resilience A.R.C. acronym will be expanded upon (from the keynote) and each student will apply it to an area of struggle in their current journey. As storms, avalanches, and surprise roadblocks inevitably come their way, this is how student leaders persist in the face of massive obstacles.

With these camps established, each student will become a verified "mountaintop leader," equipped and ready to lead their team toward any summit of their choosing.

KEYNOTE: High-Altitude Resilience for Educators

The '7 Summits' are the tallest mountain on each continent. More people have orbited in space than climbed these daunting and dangerous peaks. So few humans accomplish this feat for the exact reasons that in October 2023, 65,000 teachers quit their jobs.

Staff retention and teacher burnout are major challenges that school districts are facing internationally. Fortunately, the traits are the same for educators and climbers to succeed at overcoming long-term objectives and stay in the game: endurance, mental toughness, adaptation, teamwork, planning, skill development, and renewal are requisites to reach high altitudes, whether literal or in the classroom.

Surprisingly, these characteristics must come before passion. According to Harvard Business Review and the University of Pennsylvania's studies on positive psychology, love of the job is the result of resilience, not the other way around. Passion is fleeting; it's not sustainable against the myriad challenges educators face without a solid backbone of hardiness, renewal techniques, and a steady focus on long-term objectives.

Your staff will learn high-altitude resilience strategies based on the latest peer-reviewed research while simultaneously joining John Beede's decade-long adventure of climbing earth's tallest peaks.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The Resilience A.R.C. - A surprising 3-part tool used by high-altitude mountaineers to refresh and renew their energy, overcome overwhelm, and bounce forward after setbacks. Backed by Harvard Business Review and peer-reviewed studies, educators will be able to use this tool for the same result.

The Mountaineer's Teammate Check-In - This 4-part team-building sequence is how mountain guides generate long-term trust, provide servant leadership, and effectively encourage their teams to endure, persist, and carry on.

The Climber's Renewal Formula - A+T+D = Recharge. This powerful equation results in increased adaptability, calm in the face of adversity, and ability to find one's 'center' in moments of chaos.

The "Yeti-Slayer" Technique - Ever heard of a parent-teacher conference gone bad? Or a difficult interaction between two staff members? What about a nightmare student (or nightmare classroom of students)? This simple and powerful process reveals when self-reflection and adjustment is necessary vs. when to appropriately and confidently ignore the haters, complainers, whiners, and energy vampires that teachers will inevitably face.

Ideal Duration: 40-75 Minutes
Best Format:  50-5000+ individuals
Best Audience: Educators, staff, faculty, and administrators.

WORKSHOP: The 7 Habits of Highly Loved Educators

In this workshop, educators will get a 7-step process to develop instant rapport with students, fellow faculty, administrators, and parents. Based on the latest studies in the psychology of influence, these techniques are designed for teachers to ethically tap into the psychological hard-wiring of others and find winning solutions for all parties involved in any interaction. No matter the difficulty of the individual, these 7 techniques help faculty members to become adored by students, uncover common grounds with adults, and find winning, synergistic solutions in difficult situations.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • The Toxicity Reversal Blueprint - When negativity spreads, it's harder to stop than wildfire. This process map, when applied, nips the downward spiral in the bud and flips it on it's head. The result is an increasingly upward trajectory of morale.
  • Charisma Triple Whammy - Especially useful for introverts and anyone not a "people person," these 3 steps for becoming a favored educator result in universal respect. In turn, educators can make a life-changing difference in the lives of students' and staff.
  • The "Get On the Same Page" Process - Antagonistic individuals abound. Divided approaches, values, and cultures are increasingly frequent. This sequence brings humans together and reveals how to find common ground - even in the face of seemingly impossible differences.

Based on peer-reviewed research and psychological studies in influence, these skills facilitate authentic, genuine connection and mutual respect.  With them in place, educators will be equipped to positively transform their school cultures.

“John kicked off our conference, speaking to our 1,300 students and he definitely had the group motivated and fired up for the rest of the conference. He was swarmed with students for the rest of his time on site. His leadership and goal-setting messages definitely stuck with our kids.”

JJ COLBURN

“By FAR, the favorite speaker of our conference delegates.”

THEODORE GEHRING

North Carolina Association of Student Councils

"The rousing and spontaneous standing ovation was an immediate indication of John's successful keynote. The most impressive aspect were the number of students who, during the rest of the conference, kept discussing amongst themselves their individual list of "summits" or goals to be reached. He truly did inspire them to "Climb On."
